Sanford says for parody to be effective, it has to resemble what it's actually mocking. And the column contained far more clues to its lack of seriousness than it constitutionally needs to.
"They claim they're a mainstream newspaper, and we think they ought to act like one. And in this issue, they didn't," Janklow says.
Argus Leader Lawsuit In Court

Argus Leader lawyer Steve Sanford argues the libel accusations brought by Scott should be dismissed, because the article is clearly a parody. He read it aloud to the judge, pointing out several lines where sarcasm was intended.

"When I first read it, I actually called someone who's a mutual friend of Scott's and mine, and I said, 'Dan's lost his mind! Did you see what he wrote?'" Janklow says.
